Monday is for Random Ruminations

  • I made it back from East Asia in one piece.  Great trip.  Thank you to all of you who prayed for us!
  • I attended Handel’s Messiah at Schermerhorn over the weekend.  I had forgotten how it is mainly scripture set to music.  I wanted to shout a couple of times – but they probably would have escorted me out.
  • The Belmont men’s basketball team almost upset UT at Thompson-Boling!  It would have been a huge upset and ended Tennessee’s 36-game home win streak.  The only time I pull against Tennessee is when they play my alma mater, which isn’t often.

Belmont vs UT

  • Only two and a half more shopping days left until Christmas!
  • How ‘bout them Titans?  Huge win over the Steelers!
  • I must admit I missed it on eggnog versus boiled custard.  I have been informed that boiled custard is actually a southern delicacy.  Whatever!
  • Coldest morning of the year this morning.  I wimped out and didn’t run.
  • I have yet to watch “Its A Wonderful Life” this year.  Maybe tonight!

It’s a Wonderful Life

  • Is the house up near Lebanon on 109 with all the lights worth the drive?  I may check it out tomorrow night.

Christmas Time’s A-Coming!

Are you ready for the holiday season?  I know we’re getting into gear because I have heard the song “Christmas Shoes” five times already.  According to a recent study, by Christmas day it will have played 8,362,427,915, 516.5 times.

I’m afraid I’m going to have to tone down my “honky tonk” Christmas motif this year.  For one reason, my wife will be very happy if I do.  I love my wife and it is a source of annual marital conflict.  More importantly though, I don’t want to staple into the new vinyl siding I had added last year.

My goal is to find a 12-hour stretch and watch nothing but Christmas movies back to back to back.  Probably in this order:

  • A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott version)
  • An American Christmas Carol (Henry Winkler),
  • A Muppet Christmas Carol (Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Michael Caine)
  • A Christmas Carol (Alastair Sim)
  • It’s A Wonderful Life
  • A Garfield Christmas
  • Santa and the Three Bears
  • Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
  • Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town (Burgermeister Meister Burger)
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Original cartoon)
  • The Christmas List
  • Elf
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas
  • The Nativity

However, no “Little Drummer Boy” – it freaks me out!

I’m also thinking seriously about doing the fried turkey for Christmas day.  I’m getting fired up just thinking about it!

I must confess – I have done zero Christmas shopping.  I better get going, cause “Christmas Time’s A-Coming!”

The Day After

I didn’t eat catfish on Thanksgiving Day, but I did get some the day after.  Our family got to eat at one of my favorite restaurants.  It’s called the Swamp Guinea and it’s located in Hartwell, Georgia.  It’s all you can eat and served family style.

The menu includes:

  • Catfish
  • Flounder
  • Fried Chicken
  • Country Ham
  • Hush Puppies
  • French fries
  • Grits
  • Brunswick Stew
  • Slaw
  • Rolls
  • Sweet Tea

Needless to say – it was delicious!

Intentional Thanksgiving

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving!  It’s one of my favorite holidays.  People tend to pause and count their blessings.  It’s a great exercise.  Counting your blessings has a huge impact on our outlook and the quality of our lives.

In fact, we need to make the choice to be thankful the other 364 days of the years as well.  Thankfulness really is a choice.  In 1 Thessalonians 5:15, the Bible says, “in every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God concerning you.”  Unfortunately, we tend to focus on what we don’t have instead of what we do have.  We prefer to think about what’s wrong instead of what’s right.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about some kind of Pollyanna approach that denies the reality of hard stuff.  But, it is true that there is great value in being thankful even in the rough patches of life.   The one constant in our lives when all else seems dark is the presence and provision of God.  And for that we can rejoice.

But in most seasons we can very easily find much to be thankful for if we’ll take the time to look.

G. Campbell Morgan was a man known to practice the discipline of thankfulness.  One day he was mugged by a man who beat him up and stole his wallet.  Upon hearing the news, his friends wondered how he would demonstrate thankfulness in such an unpleasant experience.  He shared with them, “I am thankful that though I was hurt, I was not hurt bad;  and I am thankful that although my money was stolen, it was not much; and I am very thankful that I was the one robbed and not the one doing the robbing.”

May we be as intentional about Thanksgiving.

Monday is for Random Ruminations

  • It’s a bummer the Titans lost – but it may not be a bad thing in the grand scheme of things.
  • Every man wishes he could be Brett Favre!
  • UT beats Vandy in Nashville – who would have believed it after UT’s debacle in Neyland Stadium on Homecoming against Wyoming!?
  • Vandy can still finish 7-5.
  • UT can do no better than 5-7, but if they lose to Kentucky, they will set the record for most losses in school history.  Ouch!
  • If you get a chance, go see the movie “The Boy In The Striped Pajamas.”  Very powerful film.  Its only on at Green Hills, so you’ll have to make a road trip.
  • Just curious – how many of you are frying your turkey this year for Thanksgiving?
  • Also, who among you hate turkey and will be having something else?
  • My favorite non- turkey Thanksgiving meal idea is from Tina Tyler.  Her family in Pontotoc, MS have catfish for Thanksgiving!  Priceless!!
  • Whatever happened to the guy who played Radar on M*A*S*H*?
